The northern edge of the Park 16Hoven district is a special location. It offers a wide view of a city nursery and the airport behind it. On this edge, Van Bergen Kolpa Architecten, commissioned by Cedrus Vastgoed, designed ensembles of residential blocks that, in combination with blocks designed by Pauwert Architectuur, form a powerful end to the district.
The design is based on clearly designed brick volumes that form a clear unity. Rhythms of facade openings between horizontal lines bind the residential blocks together. Within this unity, differences and accents are created at various scale levels.
At the scale level of the street, the blocks differ greatly in size. The blocks form legible ensembles on either side of the lanes that cross the plan. Each lane has its own colour identity. From east to west, this progression is made visible by means of a colour gradient in the brickwork, from brown-red to bright orange-red. A subtle horizontal line can be seen in the roof surface, a reference to the lines that can be found at airports.
On the scale of the block, accents are created in the form of spotter's eyes. Here, the brick facade is pulled up. Large windows create a wide view of the surroundings. By alternating the shape and position of the accents, each block is given its own identity.
On the scale of the house, differences are made in the facade composition. A strong variation in window widths and special features in the form of beveled reveals offer a great diversity in which the view can be experienced. From close up, the special features in the detailing also become visible, such as frames and rainwater drains that lie behind the brickwork and a subtle horizontal line in the brickwork.
