Greenport West Holland

Greenport Westland-Oostland is the global center for greenhouse horticulture. It concentrates the entire chain of vegetable and flower crop production, trade and customers with associated logistics and knowledge. The area extends from the Westland to Bleiswijk and from Delft to Barendrecht and is located near the major Dutch Mainports.

Businesses and governments want to continue the leading production and trading function of Greenport Westland-Oostland to the future, but also to develop new solutions to the fast-growing urban world population. In order to achieve this ambition spatially and economically, team LEI-Wageningen UR, BVR and Bergen Kolpa Architects have collaborated in co-creation with entrepreneurs, governments and knowledge institutes for a year long.

During this period, the four major economic models within Greenport were investigated and their future development capabilities depicted: The Pivotal Function of production and Trade, Internationalization of Knowledge and Technology, the Interaction between City and Horticulture and New High Quality Biobased Products. By working with spatial building blocks, the existing spatial boundary conditions and new spatial development possibilities have been mapped.

"The knowledge of Greenport in the field of horticulture innovation is linked to the knowledge of market innovation in the urban area."

Greenport Westland Oostland
The Greenport develops through the combination of production and trade and the various connections with the Mainport and Coolports to the cooled food storage box of North West and even Eastern Europe. The connections will be made by the new Blankenburg tunnel and Benelux tunnel, multimodal nodes along the track, road and water of the Coolport Waalhaven Eemhaven, Coolport Hoek van Holland, Bleizo Zuidpoort and New Reijerwaard. In the trade areas of Westland, Oostland and Reijerwaard, imported vegetable and fruit flows are mixed with inland flows to complete assortments, especially for supermarkets. The new markets are achieved by refrigerated road transport and refrigerated rail transport. The flower production is sold through Flora Holland auction to Mainport Schiphol, but eventually also via the Coolport Hoek of Holland.

Greenport's production area is likely to decline but remains potentially internationally competitive. To this end, a large part of the greenhouse, around auction and commercial areas, has been modernized and increased to 5-10 ha for companies in vegetables and to 2-5 ha for flowers and plants. The production is powered by a central and sustainable network of residual heat and CO2 from the Mainport coupled with a decentralized and smart thermal heat grid. Smaller and older greenhouses at Monster and Pijnacker are aimed at Urban Horticulture. The areas are finely landscaped and accessible from the city via the light rail ring of the Metropolitan region of Rotterdam and The Hague. Peripherally located small and old greenhouses focus on biobased production.

The knowledge of Greenport in the field of horticulture innovation is linked to the knowledge of market innovation in the urban area. A network of local roads and public transport connects the East and West Horti campuses and R & D companies with urban education and experimental environments from north to south. The international attraction of the Greenport is co-enhanced by excellent high-rise residential and rural nature and recreational environments in the heart of Greenport.
