Westpolder Center Art

Between 1774 and 1777 the Noord-, West- and Zuidpolder were created in Berkel en Rodenrijs. The polders were created by the reclamation of the extensive lakes that had been formed from the 16th century onwards by digging away peat to below the water level.

The Westpolder was drained using three paddle wheel mills. The upper mill milled the top 1 to 1.5 meters of water from the lake, the middle mill the next 1.5 meters and the lower mill ground away the lowest water.

"This tableau brings to mind the mill that drained the Westpolder at this location for more than a century and a half."
